The opening of the Lp features six tracks recorded between 1964 and 68 by Fela's first band, the Koola Lobitos. This era is that of a joyous Highlife already focused on brass sections but more reminiscent of American funk and especially of James Brown. Connoisseurs will immediately notice that Fela still plays the trumpet on these tracks instead of the usual sax. The second part of the Lp is dedicated to the LA Sessions. It could be dubbed "Afrobeat in the Making". There Fela elaborates a more powerful formula relying even more on brass sections to create a thick and infectious groove. One of the chief interest of the LP is to be able to compare those two pivotal eras and understand the mutation of the lobitos' afro-funk into Afrobeat.
